The Last of Us suffering from horrid auto-saving bug

Got The Last of Us today? We hope you’re enjoying it as we sure did

Be cautious, though. There’s a vicious auto-save bug that could have been triggered by the game’s day one patch release.

Discovered by a few journalists, consumers and corroborated by a group of people on NeoGAF, the game’s autosave system has proven problematic now it has arrived at retail.

During my playtime with the game prior to release, I created many manual saves (I do this for most games as I get pretty paranoid about the poor nature of auto-saving in general)  but from today, numerous people have reported that the game gets stuck trying to autosave then manages not to save anything at all. Coupled with that, the game does occassionally hard-freeze and you may be forced to restart, losing a ton of progress in the process.

Your best bet is to pause the game every once in a while and look to see when the game last auto-saved itself. Obviously if it hasn’t saved for over 10 minutes, you might want to manually save the game. In fact, it’s probably worth keeping a few manual saves as back-up just in case. However some people have reported that you may not even be able to manually save because the autosave prompt won’t disappear and freezes the screen. This obviously creates bigger concerns.

The other bet is to try and avoid the day one patch altogether. Considering many people didn’t have this problem prior to release, it’s safe to assume this patch is responsible for the glitch.

We’re pretty sure Naughty Dog and Sony will be quick to get a fix sorted for this, but for now keep a regular eye on your progress and save regularly.
