Gaming Rumour Roundup (October 23, 2022): Star Wars Eclipse, Marathon, Marvel’s Wolverine and more

In the rumour space, it has definitely been an interesting week.

For years, people have speculated there is all sorts of Silent Hill news coming. Finally, Konami gave us a complete blowout. Some people were proven right. Others less so.

But things have quickly moved on and while we now know a ton about Silent Hill, leakers are already looking for the next thing to chat about.

Please bare in mind none of the information you see below has been confirmed publically by respective publishers / developers and at this time should not be treated as factual.

This weeks top rumours

  • We kick it off with Sacred Symbols and VGC who have reported that the upcoming Star Wars Eclipse will feature an all new race and be centered around political conflict. They’ve also suggested the lead will be a humanoid called Sarah, married to a character called Xando and it’s set 200 years before Phantom Menace. Sounds very Star Wars and Quantic Dream to us, but we’re going to have a long time waiting to see if they’re right.
  • One of Bungie’s upcoming projects could be a surprising reboot of their original game, Marathon. Tom Henderson suggests the idea will be a complete rebuild as a “3 man squad based extraction shooter’. Tom has indicated the game could be revealed at any point and that Bungie have previously gone on record to say they’ll have a new game by 2025. Henderson also suggests he could have more details to share soon and that the game is a PvPvE.
  • Jeff Grubb seems to have corroborated this and gone a step further on Giant Bomb’s Twitch indicating the project has been started with NetEase, will probably be a Free to Play Live Service game with no load times and minimal queues.
  • There is actually one piece of Silent Hill info doing the rounds (I know, I know) and that the previously rumoured Silent Hill: The Short Message which was rated was actually an hour long demo and a standalone experience that has since been cancelled. Lance McDonald claims the majority of it leaked after having been passed around in private. It was never officially confirmed anyway, so we’ll probably never know. What is it about Silent Hill and cancelled demos/prototypes.
  • Here’s an interesting, somewhat surprising one. With Microsoft and Sony’s court battles becoming messier by the minute, Microsoft may have inadvertently revealed Sony’s plans for 2023 in a bid to show they have a healthy exclusive lineup and don’t need to worry about Call of Duty. In documents submitted to the CMA, Microsoft have claimed “PlayStation’s spate of first- and third-party exclusive titles lined up for launch in 2023, including Spider-Man 2, Wolverine.” – It had previously been believed the game was further away but if not…Oh my!
  • Another interesting story is that Tez2 believes many AAA studios have already started receiving ‘mid-gen upgrades for PS5 and XSX, with more expected by the end of the year. He doesn’t know the timescales for release but is confident in his information.
  • Finally, it seems Obsidian are working on another massive, AAA Open World RPG. The team have quite a slate upcoming with Grounded just released, Pentiment out later this year, as well as games like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. This seems to be something different. A linkedin profile points to people working on an unannounced project. It has previously been suggested that Obsidian want to release new projects on a more regular basis over the next few years, so this definitely all lines up. One to keep an eye on.

Any big rumours we missed? Something you’re keeping an eye on? Sound out below in the comments section. We’ll be revisiting the above in a few months to see if they got things right!
