Of all the news stories expected to come out of this weekend’s Playstation Experience, this is one I did not anticipate reporting on.
We all knew Tim Schafer and the team at Double Fine were working tirelessly on a remastering of Grim Fandango – and that’s still happening by the way and even coming to PS4/Vita and PC on January 27th – but when they announced a revitalisation of Day of the Tentacle, arguably the greatest adventure game ever made, jaws, all over the world, simultaneously hit the floor.
Yes, finally. It’s really real. Day of the Tentacle, the sequel to Maniac Mansion, will be coming to PS4, Vita, Linux and PC next year. After years of hoping and waiting and begging, it’s actually really happening. I’m still pinching myself.
This one is particularly incredible because, at one time, Lucasarts were working on a re-release themselves that was apparently 80% complete, though was never officially Greenlit. I wonder if Double Fine have access to any of those assets?
We’ve got no other information on Day of the Tentacle Special Edition aside from that, so we’re going to be forced to play the waiting game for the time being. BUT with Grim so close to release, we were treated to a look at the new visuals as well as some off-camera gameplay of it running on Vita, demoed by the man himself.
Take a look…
And here’s a brief Vine of the game in action on Vita. It looks very responsive…
I’m so happy deals could be worked out to bring these two classics back for a new generation. 2015 is going to be an incredible year!
