Gaming Rumour Roundup Fact Check (August 28, 2022)

While the rumour mill is more on the dry side this week, we’ve decided to delve into some stories we posted a few months back.

August was a busy with month with Gamescom season and there were a few interesting stories doing the rounds.

But how many of them were true? Let’s look back at the August 28 Rumour Roundup and see what’s what…

  • The biggest story of the past week seems to have been a suspected acquisition of EA by Amazon. It comes from a previously trustworthy source at USA Today/GLHF, though appears to have been debunked, at least for now. It’s not the first time conversations around EA being acquired have come up and honestly, with Amazon and Netflix seemingly wanting to produce more gaming-related TV shows and films, it makes plenty of sense. 2022 has definitely been the year of the acquisition, so we’re not closing the book on this one just yet.
As was reported at the time, this one was quickly debunked and looks to be a non-starter. EA still haven’t been acquired – though they have published their last FIFA game – and there’s no clear suitors in the frame. Likewise, Amazon haven’t bought anyone out. That’s not to say we haven’t seen acquisitions, with the likes of Quantic Dreams going to NetEase and FANDOM acquiring the likes of GameSpot and GameFAQs. So far though, the big power moves happened much earlier in the year. Acquistions are complex and ever-moving things, though, so don’t rule this one out completely.
  • In more EA news, it seems like they are working with Koei Tecmo on a brand new IP. That’s according to both Jeff Grubb and a Discord user who found a new Origin API (that’s since been deactivated) No word on titles or what kind of game it’ll be, but it doesn’t sound like we’ll be waiting long for details as it’s suggested it could be revealed as soon as next month.
It’s true! The game is called Wild Hearts, it’s an EA original in collaboration with Koei Tecmo and it’s coming February 17, 2023. Looks pretty good too. Here’s the trailer.

  • According to Miller on Twitter, it seems Embracer are trying to work with Marvel to extend a gaming deal that goes beyond Avengers and possibly lends speculation to more DLC and maybe even a Guardians of the Galaxy 2. This wouldn’t be a surprise, though the timing is interesting with speculation surrounding EA and Ubisoft working on Marvel properties. Seems the license could be going the Star Wars route with more publishers getting a slice of the pie. I guess we’ll see.
Hard to know if this is still being negotiated or if it’s happened as there’s yet to be a format announcement. Likely, it’s probably still a bit too early to know. We have seen some big Marvel-based announcements in recent weeks, though, with an Iron Man game being published by EA, as well as Iron Man VR coming to Meta Quest. A Black Panther solo game is also being heavily rumoured as well as the officially confirmed crossover title with Captain America. One of those stories with ever-moving parts which we’ll keep eyes on.
  • In remake news, Liam Robertson may be hinting towards F-Zero GX coming to Switch. Or maybe not, Nintendo “leaks” often aren’t worth the tweets they’re written on these days.
    Nope!
  • Finally, PlayStation Size reckons they’ve found listings for two new PlayStation games that could be announced at TGS. Valkyrie Elysium Demo Version and Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden – There’s key art, so this seems likely, but obviously nothing is confirmed until it’s confirmed
.Yeah, both of these games got dropped in September, so this was a great spot. Square Enix have released an absolute ton of games this year, most of them seemingly announced during the recent Nintendo Direct.

Most of these didn’t really check out or perhaps it’s still too early to loop back on them. Wild Hearts looks like fun, though!
