Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Splintered Fate may be one of the more successful mobile ports in recent memory, especially with how closely it matches the excellent Hades.
So it’s little wonder Super Evil MegaCorp want to keep iterating on the game and have even thrown in a new character for good measure – the incomparable Casey Jones.
With Turtles as it is, you feel they could just keep adding content and characters for years to come and Casey proves to be an excellent person to start with. The hockey mask wearing, stick wielding vigilante slots right in alongside the amphibians and even makes himself the preferable choice with an excellent ranged attack and some hard-hitting close-quarters striking.
Casey’s puck shot from distance means enemies really struggle to overwhelm you and get in close to swarm you in numbers. It’s a first for the series and really changes up the way you approach levels and boss fights.
The issue comes in that there’s not much extra story content to really try it out with, in fact it’s almost like having a cheat code for the base game as between the Puck Shot and Casey’s ‘Juice’ shot, he can really devour an enemies health and overwhelm them quickly.
That said, when you defeat Karai in the Docks area, you can try out the ‘Junkyard’ area of the game, which sees Casey go head to head with the Punk Frogs while trying to take a ‘shortcut to Shredder’.
It’s not a huge amount of new content but you will get some new boss battles, areas, and narrative connections both to the wider story as well as some new dialogue between Casey, the Turtles and everyone else involved in the game. The Junkyard also does a good job of mixing up runs and offering a bit more variety so you’re not constantly chartering the same path to the end.
At $5.99 it’s also a fairly low price point of entry and you will also get some additional artifacts for your trouble, such as additional support for multiplayer runs and ways to stun enemies. As such, this DLC really does try to inspire you to play co-op and multiplayer and find unique ways to combine the artifacts. But the best bit, even if you don’t own it, someone with the content can host the game and invite a friend in whether they own Casey or not. Which is a really great addition.
Sadly, there are only two new achievements to grab here so if you’ve already blazed through the game once and collected everything you might feel a little underwhelmed. There’s also not a huge amount of new upgrades to spend your coins on, so again, for someone who’s already invested a lot of hours into Splintered Fate, you might find there’s not a whole lot here for you.
But Casey is a fantastic character and likely my go-to for every future run in the game – and this comes from someone who loves Donny and Mikey. This is still a budget DLC that offers more hours to a game that was already a huge, enjoyable timesink. I would absolutely check out similar content in the future – give me Shredder or Splinter next! – and would love to see more unique environments and artifacts to really fill out Splintered Fate even more.
This already makes a great game even better and for the budget price it’s still worth a peek even if you’ve already seen everything the game has to offer.
Verdict
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate Casey Jones & The Junkyard Jam does not offer huge amounts of new content to explore for completionists who’ve maxed the game out already, but Casey Jones is a fantastic new addition to the game and likely your go-to for all future runs. The Junkyard area also offers some fun new boss battles and slight story, with some cool artifacts that really encourage you to go all in on multiplayer. We hope this is just the start of expanding the game over the long term.
