As you know, we’ve been checking out a lot of third party releases on Switch 2 since launch and there’s another ollying out of nowhere.
We just got our code for Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4 – and you can expect a full review this weekend – but that’s not what I wanted to touch on first. Following RAIDOU Remastered from SEGA late last month, this is the next major third party release to simship on Switch 2…and so far, we consider it a big success.
Game content aside – as said, we’ll leave that for the review – this version of Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4 runs great in docked, but is an absolutely glorious beast in handheld. Though it does seem to be one heck of a battery drain!
It seems a little behind compared to other platforms – comparing some footage, loading in new levels definitely seems a little longer than PS5/Series X but we’ll do a more direct comparison of that for the review, and in docked, it looks there’s some blurring of the visuals and it’s less sharp. There’s also some very minor, slight frame rate drops as a level starts and on some camera pans, but once the action begins, the game runs smooth as butter! The skating and action is seamless and runs at a seemingly consistent 60FPS.
That said, the other big thing to note is the game has crashed on me at least three times already. Just straight hard-crashes that push me to the Switch 2 menu. It seems random too, so a little unclear why and is the only game I’ve had this issue with so far – I can only imagine there’ll be a patch coming at some point to address this – but definitely something I have to note about performance.
Out of the gate, the game is also sporting HDR docked and handheld, which is also great to see third parties using it in the latest releases. I’ll put together some video so you can see for yourselves – as long as you can bare with my playstyle, I’m no Pro!
And for someone like me, playing a game like Tony Hawks handheld, is the perfect home for it. It’s great, enjoyable, pick up and play fun and while I’ll also be able to check and play this on GamePass as well, I can’t imagine not going to my Switch 2 first.
So yes, there’s definitely some concessions been made and as this could be considered one of the first big tests for Switch 2, it’s clear that PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X were always going to lead the line alongside PC in terms of quality. I don’t think anyone really expected differently, but I cannot stress enough how impressed I am by how this looks and plays. Especially handheld.
Ultimately, Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4 has definitely gone to a good home on Switch 2. Iron Galaxy and Activision have done a tremendous job with this and this is pretty much going to be my entire weekend. I promise I’ll take it outside, at least.
As to whether the game is good … I’ll get back to you on that!
