Joker from Persona 5 joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as first DLC

Persona 5 was a smash hit when released on PlayStation 4 and up to then has appeared to be exclusive to the platform.

However, The Game Awards seemed to change the conversation when a teaser revealed the first piece of DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would be none other than Persona 5’s lead character, Joker.

Usually, announcements get leaked ahead of time or people have some idea of what to expect going into these shows. But this was a true, honest, and genuine surprise and has now raised expectations of the game’s battle pass to another level.

Who else could be joining the roster? Is anything off limits now? Rumours of the Grinch, Banjo Kazooie and Waluigi have been thrown around but should be thinking bigger? What about Master Chief? Nathan Drake? Lara Croft?

Smash is a series that finally pitted Mario and Sonic against one another, and also shocked the world with appearences from Solid Snake and Cloud Strife. We shouldn’t be surprised that Nintendo and Smash have done it again with Joker, and yet, here we are!

In the age of the internet where things seem to leak months in advance, The Game Awards reminded us what it was like to be genuinely surprised by something and how amazing that can feel.

It’s also offered us a glimmer of hope that maybe, someday, Persona 5 will appear on Switch. Wouldn’t that be something?

There’s no confirmed release date for Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just yet but we do know he’ll show up early next year. More as we get it.
