So we were planning to give you a full breakdown of the Mafia 2 Definitive Edition but, it’s a bit of a mess.
We even recorded some video, but most of it is missing audio. No, seriously, the cut-scenes are completely devoid of it.
And this is a known issue, I’m afraid. Frankly, the game is in an absolute state on PS4 right now. Fortunately, D3G are working on it with 2K.
That’s kind of why we’ve decided to hold back on coverage for now, to give the teams a chance to fix some bugs. See below.

But let’s just say, in its current state, this is not a good example of how to remaster a classic game. At least you can hear the voice actors in the original.
I’m hugely disappointed as a fan of the original games, I was so eager to revisit the world and dive back into the story – it’s been a while – but I’d much rather wait until everything is fixed as intended.
Mafia 2 Definitive Edition – based on the PS4 version we have access to – has poor, regular frame rate issues, loses audio completely, and at times actually looks pretty rough when the focus isn’t on the main characters.
I’ve even seen one character randomly appear in front of my car when they were nowhere in sight just seconds before, though that could be partly to do with the AI of a ten year old game.
In recent weeks, we’ve had excellent takes with Saints Row The Third and The Wonderful 101. Even the likes of Trials of Mana and Final Fantasy VII Remake have blown us away with fresh reimaginings.
Currently, this just isn’t in the same category. While it’s safe to assume the Mafia 1 Remake coming in August will be a much bigger and better deal, there’s clearly still a lot of work to do on the other two games.
We’ll keep an eye out for any updates and as soon as a new patch drops, we’ll let you know what we think.
For right now, though, it’s probably best to wait a bit longer to play this, otherwise you’ll be sorely disappointed.
Fortunately, 2K brought three more of their brilliant franchises to Switch today and we’ve got some good news to share on those in the coming days.
