Nickelodeon’s own Nick Toons have been entertaining kids for years.
From the early days of Rugrats and Rocko’s Modern Life, to today’s takes on classics like Spongebob and the Turtles, they’ve given so much back to audiences old and new. Now their latest game celebrates them in an all new, fun and interesting way.
In The Dice of Destiny, you can play classic Nicktoons like Leonardo, Jimmy Neutron, and Timmy Turner, cast as DnD classes like Barbarians, Wizards, even Knights. They’ll all team up together to fight against all types of unusual monsters and creatures, smashing crates and gaining lots of lovely loot.
It’s a classic RPG tale set in a sub-universe, in a sort isometric, real-time Diablo-like. You’ll gain XP from completing missions and beating monsters, while progressing the story to unlock new characters and move between the game’s familiar environments.
As you’re hacking and slashing through one beast after another, levelling up, you’ll also equip new items you pick up along the way with increasing rarity and distinct attributes that seperate them.
Unlike Diablo, of course, it’s a lot more family friendly and a great game played together with kids and adults with each Nicktoon taking on a different character class, using unique powers to make their way through the game. You’ll also use different combos to blast through waves and hordes, timing it to be as efficient as possible, keeping one eye on your health and mp meters.
As mentioned, the worlds you explore will be familiar locations like Bikini Bottom and the Turtle’s sewers, so you’ll be fighting through foes that would feel relevant to those environments. All throughout, players will find little puzzles and side quests and challenges to complete, all culminating in a boss battle at the end. From Plankton to Ember, each is introduced in fun creative ways.
It’s all complimented by some brilliant voice acting ripped right out of the shows, as well as lovely soothing scores and musics and sound effects. As you move so the game’s story comes and pieces together as the characters try to find a way back to their individual homes through portals that have manifested into this side world.
This is a perfect little game to play portably – whether you’re on Switch or Steam Deck – and has a pretty decent gameplay loop with a good mission flow that you’ll find yourself gradually becoming really invested in. The visual style is eye-catching with beautiful animation and there’s a decent enough variety in the characters on offer to encourage replayability. Though some do feel a bit more familiar than others.
Dice of Destiny is a fun, simple action RPG that has a decent enough story and a good enough variety and hook to keep you playing, though it’s not the best of its genre and can be a bit monotonous after a while.
Verdict
Nicktoons & The Dice of Destiny is a decent action RPG that is great to play with friends and suits beautifully in handheld play. There is good character variety and amount of content, but it can get a bit repetitive and some characters play out similarly to one another. A great game in co-op but one you may want to wait for on sale.
