Xenoblade Chronicles X gets Switch 2 Upgrade Shadow Drop

In a move no one saw coming, Nintendo have shadow dropped a premium Switch 2 update for Xenoblade Chronicles X.

In a week where many are expecting news on The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon and even a more general Direct, the big N have once again shown how unpredictable they can be and released a paid upgrade for one of the last major Switch 1 releases, Xenoblade Chronicles X, giving it a Switch 2 version.

This is extremely welcome and great news for the original Wii U release and now means that it’s a rare game that has released on three generations simultaneously, with GTA V and Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild also being other recent examples. Good company!

What’s more a physical edition will release on April 16, with the digital now available with immediate effect on the eShop.

Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch 2 Edition boasts 60FPS and 4K resolutions, so looks and plays better than ever. And those who own Xenoblade Chronicles X on Switch 1 will be able to purchase an upgrade pack to benefit from the updates.

It does certainly add to the confusing pricing tiers that these upgrades are getting, though. Just recently, games like Hollow Knight got a free Switch 1 – 2 upgrade with a patch, and we’ve had games that have Upgrade Packs that cost £7,99 such as Metroid Prime 4, and the Zelda games.

Meanwhile, games like Kirby and the Forgotten World and the upcoming Super Mario Wonder Upgrade Packs will go for a more premium £16.99.

The pricing this time falls more in-line with the recent Switch 2 upgrade pack Animal Crossing: New Horizons received, costing £4.19. Though it does seem like this time players aren’t paying for additional content in the game, rather it’s solely a performance boost. Which is certainly an interesting choice.

We’ll be taking a look at the upgrade for ourselves to see how this fares. Regardless, it feels increasingly like those that didn’t pick it up last year made the right call and can now try out the true ‘Definitive Edition’. Now all we need are upgrades for the other three games…

Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition Nintendo Switch 2 Edition (phew!) is out now on the Nintendo eShop.
