Do you still think mobile gaming is a fad?
40 billion (yeah, that’s a lot of zeros) apps have been downloaded since the launch of the App Store, 20 billion of which happened in 2012. Yeah, mobile gaming is sure showing signs of slowing down…
A report by GI.Biz says that December 2012 was the store’s busiest month with 2 billion app downloads recorded.
The report goes on to talk about some individual success stories. For example, the phenomenal Temple Run was downloaded 75 million times in 2012. Games in the Angry Birds series were also downloaded 30 million times over the Christmas period; 8 million of which were on Christmas Day. Insanely, that works out at 1 Angry Birds download for every other device purchased over the holidays.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice Present of Internet Software and Services, is beaming with pride ‘It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community. Developers have made over $7 billion on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.’
In a nutshell, Apple are well on track to becoming the first Trillion Dollar Company. In other news, the App Store is huge and prints money.
