So here’s an unexpected story for you – World of Warcraft might be getting official controller support.
Dataminers have got access to the Alpha of the upcoming WoW expansion, Shadowlands, and made a very interesting discovery
Marlamin on Twitter has linked to a friend on his Discord Channel who has discovered mentions of gamepad support in the coding.
It goes a step further as Bloerwald on Twitter has found references to PS4, PS4 Pro, and PS5 under Default Game Pad Bindings.
Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but this next part certainly makes things interesting.
The reveal has prompted Blizzard into action, and well, it certainly fans the flames of speculation. Kalvax, the Community Manager has indicated they want ‘to make WoW more widely accessible’ and ‘in Shadowlands, they’re attempting to add some support for keybinds, camera, and turning a character on controls such as the Xbox Adaptive Controller’.
This is fantastic news for players who’ve never been able to play World of Warcraft before. The Xbox Adaptive Controller has been a massive game changer in the industry and if it opens a game like Warcraft up to more players all these years later, I’m excited for the game’s future.
While Kalvas doesn’t mention the PlayStation Controllers by name, it’s a fair assumption that if work is being done on one controller, others are being looked at as well. And, well, Kalvax says controllers ‘such as’ the Xbox Adaptive Controller.
And that brings us to the biggest question of all. If Blizzard have found a way to make Shadowlands – and World of Warcraft as a whole playable on controller – is it possible a console port could follow?
The Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV have been playing comfortably on consoles for several years now, as have many other MMORPGs. With a new generation on the horizon, has the time finally come for the biggest MMO of them all to come to consoles?
Like I said, unexpected.
