Marathon Seasons Detailed ahead of launch

Marathon, the latest release from Bungie, is about to drop tomorrow and the buzz is real.

Something of a throwback game for them to their original release, while also being their newest game since Destiny 2 launched, Marathon just came off a server slam test during Steam Next Fest which was largely successful and now it’s ready to take all competitors, head on.

With the game releasing later today, Bungie have provided an overview of the game’s Seasonal structure and what to expect once the game releases on PC, PS and Xbox.

Seasons will last three months, with the first beginning on launch day, and each season features new content and changes as you grow and progress through the game.

Seasonal updates add new gameplay mechanics, new gear, runner shells, zones, events and will be free for all players to access or earn with no expansions or paid DLC required.

Season 1 is named ‘Death is the First Step’ and will be part of a new ‘Gold Rush’ on Tau Ceti. This begins the faction war and will see players explore the surface and attempt to unlock the way into orbit. Once that happens, the Cryo Archive – the fourth zone –  becomes available. And this is considered and end-game zone on the Marathon ship full of puzzles, valuts and new enemies.

This is just the start, though and during mid March, Ranked Mode unlocks where you can really test yourself against the rest of the world and climb the ranked ladder to earn exclusive rewards every season.

Other surprises are planned and this will directly lead players into the second season in June – Nightfall. This will have a new theme and combination of features and content, with loot and progreession systems tweaked and other new content to find and explore.

There will be a night time version of an existing map – Dire Marsh – in the second season for instance, and a new Runner shell with new weapons and mods. A new system is even being worked on to adjust the way you play – The Cradle – where you’ll get more options and independence in how a Runner’s shell and strengths and weaknesses are managed.

This accompanies the mass of launch content already available, including…

  • Complete faction and contract progression
    • All six factions, including Sekiguchi Genetics
  • All six launch Runner shells, including Thief
  • Three zones, including Outpost
    • Outpost will unlock the day after launch, giving the community time to gear up and unlock the zone at Runner Level 12
  • 28 weapons, plus mods, implants, cores, and more to craft your perfect builds
  • Earnable cosmetics, achievements, and storytelling through the Codex

Marathon is ready to land in just a few short hours on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
