Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution – First Play

The fact Naruto is one of the longest running animes in history probably explains why there are so many video-games based on the young boy’s adventures. Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is the latest one and promises to add a few new ideas to the series.

One of the main modes in this new Naruto adventure is Ninja Escapades. It consists of different chapters that explore stories usually not given as much detail as those Naruto fans are familiar with.

The first chapter in this mode is called “Creation of the Akatsuki” and is a perfect example of what the developers wanted to do. Characters like Konan are given more lead time in this one. It really feels like it wants to focus on lesser-known characters in the series, and that’s a great thing for expanding the universe.

Like with the Generations video-game, the flow of this mode consists of a cut-scene followed by a fight. It should make fans excited given the fact that these are original stories. Even more so as the cut-scenes are some of the best seen in a Naruto video-game.

The cut-scenes have been improved to the point that it’s almost impossible to distinguish them from the anime. Even the in-game visuals have been improved so that it makes it even harder to find any differences between the anime and the Naruto video-games.

The same also applies to the various character fight animations. It’s clear they have been carefully given the attention they deserve. Each character’s trademark fighting animations are represented so it really feels like being a part of the anime.

Another new mode is the Ninja World Tournament where all the characters battle it out to see who is the best ninja. The idea is to pick a favourite character and then go from rank D to the much coveted rank S. The only obstacles in the way of fame and glory are the other ninjas itching for a fight.

One of the best ideas for this mode is that the character can move around the island that the tournament is set in. There isn’t much to explore at first, but more areas become available as the character moves up the ranks.

The first round consists of a battle between four characters and the goal is to earn the most orbs. Each character starts with a thousand orbs and loses some whenever hit. Others can then grab these orbs and the one that holds the most at the end of the round wins. Any character that loses all orbs instantly loses the round. It worked quite well given that it is a change from the usual one to one battles associated with Naruto video-games.

Switching between targets to attack during this round is very simple. All it takes is moving the right stick in the direction of the chosen target.

Outside of the tournament, there are many event quests to take on. Early on, it seems like these quests are mainly there to earn character allies to take into battles. It involves tracking down characters like Naruto to train with. It’s a nice idea that helped to make the game more interesting. It almost makes it feel like a proper role playing experience, since exploring the island and seeing what is there to do is actually quite fun.

The typical Team Battle is used for another round in the qualifications round of the tournament. As usual, there are two support characters who can aid the main character, as long as their individual energy bars are full.

The last round player takes the concept of the free for all four player battle and make it so it is necessary to take control of two characters. The total number of orbs earned by both character is then used to see which team wins at the end.

It really seems like each round of the Tournament brings in some new battle conditions, which is actually quite exciting. It definitely showed the most potential compared to all other rounds.

As usual there are many other aspects to consider such as titles, scores at the end and so on. It should make Naruto fans feel right at home.

It seems like Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is sticking to what it does best – entertain fans who have played the various Naruto video-games released over the years, but there are a few new ideas found, including the Tournament mode, which does make it more appealing. If the rest of the game is like this, then it should prove popular with fans of the Ninja all over the world.
