A stealth Switch system update 4.0.0 hit last night which adds video capture for sharing on social media.
It’s easily the most important and biggest update so far as you can also transfer user data between systems and pre-load certain games ahead of launch.
By holding in the Capture button, you can now grab the last thirty seconds of game footage, add to your gallery, then edit before posting on Facebook or Twitter. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work on every game right now – actually only seemingly supported by the following first party games.
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- ARMS
- Splatoon 2
It’s also been confirmed that Super Mario Odyssey will offer video capture when it launches on October 27th. No word if/as/when new games will be added.
You’ll be able to transfer data to another Switch console by going to Settings / User. This will, however, wipe all the data from the original Switch. A staple of most Nintendo products.
However, pre-loading and pre-purchasing games is now available on some titles on the eShop, and match up software versions with other users on the system. There’s even been some tweaks to the news system and new images to use for your avatars.
Even the Joy-Cons have received little updates today, though it’s not clear what those improvements are.
It’s nice to see video capture finally make it to a Nintendo device, even though it’s a far cry from both Microsoft and Sony’s offerings.
Noticed any other features we haven’t picked up? Tried it for yourself? Let us know what you think.
