The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom DLC is unlikely

The race for Game of the Year is heating up and the latest Zelda has a real shot of claiming it.

People have been loving returning to Hyrule on their Switch, getting back to playing as Link in another epic adventure. But now many have rolled credits, they’re wondering if there’s more to come.

Its predecessor, Breath of the Wild received two massive expansions post launch and it’s fair to say Nintendo’s DLC plans have been a lot more widespread on their games in recent years.

However, it seems further content isn’t in the plans for Tears of the Kingdom, which will come as a surprise to many.

In an interview with Famitsu, (via a translation from VGC) Series Producer Eiji Aonuma has stated ‘we are not planning to release additional content.’

The reasoning? ‘We feel like we have already fully explored and exhausted the gameplay possibilities in this world.’

Wow, that seems pretty conclusive. And his comments go further to distance Tears of the Kingdom away from DLC and maybe open the possibility of a sequel ‘If in the future we find a compelling reason, we may revisit that world once again. Whether it’s another sequel or an entirely new title, I believe the next game will offer a completely new experience. I hope you’ll look forward to it.’

Sounds like Nintendo are moving right along with the Zelda series. With rumours abound of a new Nintendo system coming in the near future, it makes sense that they would want a flagship Zelda title on that hardware that offers something new and different.

Still, it’s a real shame we won’t be playing any more in this particular world. At least, for the time being.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was awarded our Game of the Half Year 2023.
